ARTIST | INSTRUCTOR

ABOUT ME

Valerie Flynn is a ceramic artist and instructor specializing in both wheel throwing and handbuilding, Her personal work focuses on functional, whimsical, and ornate art pieces decorated with her own hand carved stamps, abstract patterns, florals, and colorful underglazes.

Valerie brings 15 years of clay experience to Burkhead. After a decade dedicated to wheel throwing, she transitioned her primary focus to handbuilding, finding joy in the unlimited structural possibilities along with the ability to creatively combine both techniques.

A passionate creative entrepreneur, Valerie has run her own pottery business, Val Flynn Pottery for ten years and has spent the last five years teaching on and off. Three and a half years ago, she founded Studio 606, a thriving local art shop and storefront that proudly showcases her own work alongside creations from over 30 local artists.

In the classroom, Valerie is dedicated to creating a supportive, welcoming environment where students of all skill levels can explore their creativity, refine their technique, and fall in love with ceramics.

Beginner Hand-building and Sculpture with Valerie Flynn - Saturday Mornings, 11/7-12/12, 10:00am - 1:00pm

During the 6-week class, students will be encouraged to experiment with form and texture, allowing them to create both functional and non-functional sculptural works.

The instructor will help beginner level students get comfortable working with clay in its many stages from raw clay to finished artwork.

Come with an initial idea/project and you will develop your vision to final product, with an emphasis on personal expression and exploration. We will also discuss surface treatments, glazing options, and finishing techniques.

By the end of this class, you will have gained the confidence to continue exploring sculptural clay work independently. And more importantly, you will have gained friends along with you!
