In this 2 day workshop you will learn how to take flat glass panels and turn them into a beautiful sculptural hummingbird. This class is recommended for people who already have some experience with making flat stained glass panel. You should have a basic understanding of cutting, copper foiling and soldering glass.

Don't worry about the supplies. The class price covers all the essential materials and shared tools such as glass grinders and soldering irons. You're also welcome to choose from our scrap glass or purchase your own. We have glass and some extra supplies available for purchase, ensuring you have everything you need for a successful class.

3D Stained Glass Orchid Workshop

Create an elegant three-dimensional orchid that brings the timeless beauty of this graceful flower to life in stained glass. In this unique two-day workshop, you'll learn techniques for constructing a sculptural glass orchid complete with leaves, blooms, and a decorative planter display.

Designed for Intermediate to Advanced stained glass students, you'll complete every step of the copper foil process, including cutting, grinding, foiling, soldering, and finishing. This project requires precise fitting, careful assembly, and advanced soldering techniques, making prior stained glass experience essential.

This workshop is taught by a talented guest instructor, Kristin Norman, who specializes in three-dimensional stained glass. She'll share the construction methods and professional techniques she uses to transform flat glass into beautiful sculptural art.

Techniques: Glass cutting, grinding, copper foiling, three-dimensional assembly, soldering, and finishing

Leave with a beautiful stained glass orchid that never needs watering—a stunning handcrafted centerpiece that captures the elegance of a blooming orchid and will brighten your home year-round.

Workshop Schedule

  • Monday (2:00–6:00 PM): Cut, grind, and foil all glass pieces while preparing the project for assembly.

  • Wednesday (2:00–6:00 PM): Assemble, solder, reinforce, and finish your orchid, then mount it in its decorative planter with moss accents.

All materials, including the planter and display materials, are included in the materials fee.

Want to continue to perfect your stained glass skills?  In this 6 session class, you will have the freedom to create your own pattern and perfect your cutting and soldering technique to create your own unique stained glass window of any size.

We will discuss everyone’s project plans in detail during the first class. Come to class prepared with an idea of what you would like to create. You can prepare your pattern out on paper or digitally. If you like to design a pattern digitally, bring a laptop to the first class. 

You will have access to Burkhead Art Center’s stained glass tools and equipment but will need to purchase stained glass and other consumables, some of which are available to purchase onsite.

Class and materials fees cover the use of shared tools such as glass grinders, soldering irons and basic materials. You will need to purchase glass, solder, copper foil, and caming appropriate for your chosen project.

SPRING WORKSHOP: Fused Glass Flowers Wednesday June 7th 11am - 1pm

Create your own vibrant glass flower to brighten your home or garden! In this hands-on workshop, students will design a one-of-a-kind fused glass flower using a variety of colorful glass pieces, frit, and design techniques.

You’ll be guided through the process of cutting, layering, and arranging glass to create petal shapes and unique patterns—no two flowers are ever the same. Students can choose from our collection of custom handmade ceramic molds, designed in-house to give each flower its own organic, sculptural form.

We’ll also introduce the basics of the kiln firing process and how glass transforms under heat, while we take care of the firing for you. Your finished piece will be kiln-fired, shaped, and mounted on a garden stake—ready to display.

Finished flowers will be available for pickup approximately 2 weeks after the workshop.

No experience necessary—just bring your creativity!
